For Adults and Young People

UK guidelines recommend children, young people and adults who struggle with binge eating should be offered guided self-help. This means working through a book about binge eating and having sessions with a therapist.

Guided self-help may not be right for everyone in which case, cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT-ED) is the next recommended treatment and should cover:

  • How to plan you food intake every day

  • Working out the trigger that make you binge

  • Helping you to change negative beliefs about your body

  • Helping you stick to new eating habits

Your body is unlikely to change during your therapy because it is not designed to help you lose or gain weight.  If you need to reach a healthy weight, this should be part of your longer term recovery.
