Usually, your local NHS specialist community eating disorder service will require a GP referral but do check as some also encourage self-referrals.
Once a referral is made, you’ll meet with a mental health professional from within the team. They’re likely to perform a lengthy eating disorder assessment before discussing treatment options.
The therapy team will consist of psychologists, dieticians, occupational therapists, psychotherapists, peer support workers and psychiatrists and will collaborate with other community mental health teams. People who need to be treated in hospital will be referred to an inpatient unit.
NHS services are continuously working to ensure all referrals are seen as quickly as possible but, in some areas, there may be some delay in being able to receive treatment.
